VLC media player coming to Android devices

VLC has been hugely popular amongst Windows, Mac and Linux users as a minimalist solution that’s capable of playing almost every thinkable file format. The open-source project took its first baby steps into the mobile space with the release of an iOS version for Apple’s iPad in September.
The VLC team has been working on an Android version for months now, but progress was initially hamstrung by the fact that Android’s multimedia output libraries are in Java . However, Google released an updated version of its Android NDK earlier this month, which makes it easier to use native code for Android apps.  The team behind the open source video player may release an Android app early in 2011, possibly within weeks of the new year, though no specific dates are known.

Android Map App Will Get 3D Buildings, Compass Orientation, And Offline Capabilities

The Google Map App on Android phones will soon get a major upgrade which will allow it to render map images a lot faster, incorporate 3D buildings, offer offline caching, and use the compass to orient the map. In a talk this evening at the D Mobile conference, Android chief Andy Rubin gave a sneak peak of the new app.
At the heart of the new app is a dynamic map rendering engine which draws maps as you use them, and offers smoother transitions when zooming in and out of different levels. The dynamic rendering will also make it possible to start to show 3D buildings as you zoom into the street-level view. The touch screen will allow you to tilt and rotate the map and buildings.
