Nielsen’s New App Playbook Debunks Mobile App Store Myth
Mobile carrier app stores are a long way from dead. Despite the fanfare around application stores tied to specific mobile devices such as iPhones and BlackBerries, a new Nielsen survey finds ongoing loyalty to carrier stores. As of the end of 2009, half of all applications users were accessing carrier app stores according to Nielsen’s new App Playbook.
That said, the Apple App Store was the clear leader in preferred application stores in the United States and, combined with the dedicated AT&T Application Store, devices running on the AT&T network have the most popular stores.
The relatively new BlackBerry App World Store was the second most popular app store due to BlackBerry’s industry-leading installed base.
Carrier application stores come in next on the rankings due to the size of their subscriber base, suggesting users of more standard feature phones drove much of this ongoing popularity.
Nielsen’s App Playbook surveys more than 4,000 application downloaders in the United States every six months about their mobile application usage. It allows companies in the mobile ecosphere to monitor the transition and growth of the application market as mobile users shift from feature phones to smartphones.
HTC CEO confirms Windows Phone 7 device for late 2010
HTC CEO Peter Chou confirmed taht HTC intend to release a Windows Phone 7 series device by the end of this year. This statement ends the speculations that HTC may drop the new OS until Microsoft permit custom UIs.
As you already know, Microsoft have very strict rules for what goes and what doesn't on their new Windows Phone 7 OS and for one, home-brewed user interfaces are forbidden. No manufacturer will have the right to customize the Windows Phone 7 in any way so Microsoft can deliver uniform user experience throughout various devices.
Windows Phone 7 emulator now available
If you are eager to test the new Windows Phone 7 and can't wait until its official launch, there is now a way to do that. Microsoft have released an emulator which gives let's you try out their latest mobile OS straight from your PC.
A standard Windows Phone 7 bin-file comes with the dev kit, but it offers almost nothing except the OS environment. It's intended for developers for testing and debugging their apps.
Shortly after the tools' release however, a new unlocked OS image leaked, packing the Windows Phone 7 OS by Microsoft in its current stage of development. MS are not surprised by the leak but wanted to remind everyone that most of the platform is still in the early stages of its development and none of its parts is even close to a final stage.
Well, the curiosity is the strongest motivator so we tried it and extracted some nice screenshots. As was to be expected, the performance is far from perfect so we can hardly pass a verdict but at least we get the idea what to expect.
HTC Legend, HTC Desire and HTC HD mini ready to roll
As promised, HTC introduced three new phones and the score is Android 2 - WinMo 1. The HTC Legend is a Hero's remake and the Desire is a half-twin of the Nexus One. In the PocketPC camp, there's the HTC HD mini. Small it very well is, not so sure about the HD bit. But still, the tiniest among them is actually the big news here. The Legend and the Desire leaked well in advance.
Minimum hardware requirements for Windows Phone 7 revealed

Microsoft is putting an end to free style design and is specifying three variants of Windows Phone 7 devices, that prescribe form factor, CPU, graphics and possibly more. Each variant, or “chassis”, specifies one of the most popular form factors, though we only have specifics for Chassis 1 for now.
Chassis 1 describes the requirements for “big touchscreen” phones. There’s no minimum screen size or resolution yet, but previous rumors suggested 3.6” WVGA.
