Android 2.4 Ice Cream will be released right around the June / July 2011

Google will release the next version of its mobile phone operating system, Android 2.4, in the summer right around the June / July, 2011. As you may already know, Ice Cream follows on the back of the launch of Donut (D), Eclair (E), Froyo (F), Gingerbread (G) and Honeycomb (H) with the next iteration in the list of releases Ice Cream (I). Sources talking to Pocket-lint confirmed the release, Android 2.4 will be announced somewhere around Google’s IO conference at the beginning of May 2011. This of course puts to rest the idea that Honeycomb will be released as 2.4 – especially since it was just announced as 3.0, but I have a bit of wonder in my mind on why they’d go from 2.3 to 3.0 then back to 2.4, unless they don’t plan on advancing past 2.9 with Android for mobile phones?
