Microsoft announced the Surface tablet run Windows RT

Microsoft on Monday announced the Surface tablet during a press conference in Los Angeles, California. Rumors leading up to the event suggested that the Redmond-based company had an own-brand tablet in store, and a leaked spec sheet that emerged on Monday pointed to an Xbox-focused slate that would merge entertainment, gaming and high-definition output into a 7-inch tablet that would mark Microsoft’s premiere entry into the market. Bits and pieces of various rumors ended up panning out, and Microsoft unveiled its first own-brand Windows tablet line.

Dell will launch a 10.8-inch tablet with Windows 8, removable battery support

After a number of failed attempts in the Android tablet market, Dell is looking to readdress the tablet space with Windows 8. According to a leaked document obtained by Neowin, Dell will launch a 10.8-inch tablet with 1,366 x 768-pixel resolution and a dual-core Atom processor later this year. The slate will also be equipped with a fingerprint reader, an 8-megapixel rear camera, a 2-megapixel front-facing camera, Intel graphics, 2GB of RAM and a massive 128GB solid-state drive. Unlike many other tablets, Dell has included a removable battery that will come in two sizes. A smaller battery will get between six and eight hours of battery life, while a larger one will offer between 10 and 12 hours of usage per charge. The tablet is rumored for a late fall launch, and no pricing details were reported.

Samsung has stopped the production of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, upgrade it with a Quadcore Processor

The fine folks over at Netbooknews are reporting that Samsung has ended production on the GT P5100 -- better known as the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1. The story comes courtesy of an unnamed "Korean Samsung insider" who claims the device is getting upgraded to a quad-core CPU. Whether the chip in question is the much lauded 32nm Exynos 4412, which packs not only four Cortex A9 cores, but four Mali 604 GPU cores as well, is unknown. It's also not clear how this is going to affect US launch plans. Rumors are the Galaxy Note 10.1 will be getting a similar brain transplant before hitting the market. Sadly, all we can do right now hold our breath and wish real hard that both will hit shelves sooner rather than later and with an extra pair of cores in tow. Sammy better get a move on too if it's gonna have to give Uncle Sam another crack at this slate.

First Google tablet delayed until July

Google’s first Tablet may be pushed back until July, Unnamed sources informed The Verge on Friday that Google pushed back its planned release so it could tweak the device, however. The 7-inch tablet is supposedly equipped with a quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and Wi-Fi connectivity. The device would reportedly cost $249 in its current state, but Google and ASUS are both looking to reduce the price. Earlier rumors indicted that the Mountain View-based company was attempting to offer the tablet for as little as $149. It has also been speculated that Google could be delaying the planned release in order to pre-load its tablet with the next version of Android — Jelly Bean. The Verge claims this scenario is unlikely though, as the current product is designed for Android 4.0.

Image leak Google's Nexus tablet avaiable

Pocketnow on Tuesday published what it believes to be a press image of Google’s Nexus tablet, although the blog received no other details. The image reveals a very familiar design with a full-sized SD slot, a microUSB connector and a micro HDMI port. The icons on the display reveal that the render was clearly done before Google’s massive Play rebranding, so things may have changed slightly since the images were made. It should also be noted that the company’s previous “Nexus” devices offered no expandable storage. Google’s tablet is expected to enter production this month and ship around June. The slate could be unveiled at Google’s annual I/O conference on June 27th if earlier rumors pan out.

Asus will fix Transformer Prime ICS 'lockups' in February

A number of Transformer Prime owners are experiencing random lockups on their devices following the recent Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update. Gary Key, an Asus technical marketing manager, has confirmed that the company "hope[s] to have a fix available in early February." The issues follow no clear trend, and 400 replies at XDA Developers suggests that it's reasonably widespread. We saw no evidence of lockups during our week-long preview of Android 4.0 on the Transformer Prime, so we're unable to comment directly on the issues, but users have reported lockups in high performance mode, browsing, and randomly during daily use.

Toshiba to unveil affordable 7-inch tablet and world’s thinnest 10-inch tablet at CES

Toshiba’s tablets never took off like the company wanted, but according to Notebook Italia, Toshiba will soon launch an entry-level 7-inch Android tablet that will debut at next week’s Consumer Electronics Show. The black and blue slate features a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, a 1024 x 600-pixel display, a rear camera, a microUSB port and a microSD slot. A leaked image also reveals three capacitive buttons, leading us to believe it will not be running Android 3.2 Honeycomb or Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. With the recent success of the Kindle Fire, numerous low-priced tablets are slated to appear at this CES and Toshiba’s new 7-inch model will be among them. Additionally, according to Toshiba’s Japanese website, the company will be showcasing the “world’s thinnest and lightest 10.1-inch tablet” at CES next week. Toshiba introduced the AT200 tablet last fall, which measured at just 7.7mm thick, however the company never announced a release date.

Video review via emulator WebOS 3.0

PreCentral have managed to acquire a leaked copy of HP’s webOS 3.0 beta 1 software development kit (SDK). Why is this a good thing? Because contained within said SDK rests a TouchPad, webOS 3.0 emulator, of course. While emulators only provide 50% of the TouchPad story — the other half being hardware — it is useful to get a high-level overview of what user interface will look like. There’s an eighteen minute video overview (after break). Click to source to view more images.

Microsoft Will Demo Windows 8 Tablet by the End of June?

According to a source at Microsoft, the company hopes to show off its new Windows 8 design for tablets by the end of its fiscal year in June. Maybe Microsoft will also be using concepts from the "Metro" interface developed for Windows Phone 7.
Many believe that Microsoft Windows 8 will have its first beta by September, but the company usually has at least one or more extra beta releases followed with at least one more candidate release. Microsoft is known for a three-year release schedule it adheres to for new OS and could have Windows 8 on tablets by the end of 2012, which would put it three years after Windows 7 shipped.

iPad 2 Release Date May Be Delayed to June?

Apple shipments of the iPad 2 may have been delayed from April until June due to production bottlenecks at Hon Hai, according to Bloomberg.

The delay arose after Cupertino, California-based Apple made design changes before the Lunar New Year, according to a report by Vincent Chen and Alison Chen, analysts at Yuanta. Jill Tan, an Apple spokeswoman in Hong Kong, declined to comment on the report. Edmund Ding, a spokesman for Hon Hai, didn’t answer calls to his Taiwan and China mobile phones.
"Our checks suggest new issues are being encountered with the new production and it is taking time to resolve them," said Chen in the report. "As a number of Android 3.0 tablets are being launched in April and May, the delay in iPad 2 shipments may give the Android camp a brief window of opportunity."

Dell 2011 Roadmap several smartphones, tablets

An alleged internal product roadmap has leaked, and it appears to reveal Dell’s complete smartphone and tablet lines for 2011 and the first quarter of 2012, including three smartphones and six tablets.

Not to be outdone, the Dell Millenium follows in Q4 with a 4.3 inch screen, qHD 960x540 resolution,  and DLNA support on top of dual-core Ice Cream goodness. Another 8mp shooter (with 1080p video) appears on the back of this with a VGA front camera.
