The collective Hive Mind at Techland has compiled a list of the 10 hottest games available for the iPhone and iPod Touch. A sprinkling of classics to just released games made the cut and we're sure you'll like them just as much as we do. Have any you'd like to add? Sound off in comments.
Scrabble
If you're a fan of the board game, try going 24 hours without playing Scrabble on your iPhone. Nobody's ever been able to do it. It's like hunting for snipe. On a list of the all time best ways to spend $5, this one's up near the top.
Catan
One of the most addictive, wonderful, and award-winning board games in history, Catan for iPhone is a must-buy for any fan. Best of all, it's only $5 and it never gets old. Online multiplayer would make this game dangerously addictive but the single player and local hotseat multiplayer features do a pretty solid job on their own.
It can't possibly take the place of the full-blown PC version but at $7, Civilization Revolution for the iPhone keeps down the shakes and then some until you can get back home.
This is without a doubt the most addictive game available for the iPhone. I hear the iPad version is equally addictive. I can't seem to explain why it's so fun to play. It just is. Trust me. Zombie Smash is also a good alternative to mix it up.
The latest from American McGee's Spicy Pony is dark, vile and wicked fun for a puzzle game. It's simple, really. Help your little mouse friend escape the Crooked House. A handful of the puzzles (there are 72) are difficult to solve but I'd rather be challenged then waste $2 on a mindless game.
Eliss is tough to describe: players need to move spontaneously spawning blobs of color away from each other in a cosmic setting with helpful black holes, slo-mo asteroids and angry comets. But all you really need to know is that it's a nearly perfect slice of touch gaming. Eliss makes the player frantically tap, pinch and slide across the touchscreen in ways that just wouldn't be possible on PC or console. This genius game feels like the reason the iPhone was invented.
Drop7's creates unrelenting addiction of math. Making falling globes of numbers disappear on a 7x7 grid may not sound fun but, when the rules finally click in your head, you'll never put the game down. It's got simple rules, a hypnotic soundtrack and just enough visual flair to generate a rhythmic allure that almost make you feel like you're getting smarter by playing it. Drop7's a great example of how less can be more on the iPhone.
Quordy
As far as word games are concerned, Quordy is at the top for iPhone users. Create as many words as possible from the 16 characters available to you. Play against friends or on your own. Our very own Douglas Wolk is currently seeking opponents to crush. Are you up to the challenge?
GeoDefense Swarm
This seems to be a staff favorite at Techland and for good reason. It's a lot like Tower Defense but requires an extra bit of strategy and thought. Thumbs up all around.
Rolando
Rolando was the first iPhone that felt like a full offering. In tasking players to usher cute, roly-poly characters around the world, its platforming mechanics felt polished on the level of a good console game and used the native attributes of the device. The inputs - tilt to move, swipe to jump, tap to focus - made sense intuitively and the music and graphics were full of funky charm.
