Verizon denies blocking Google Wallet on Galaxy Nexus

Verizon has issued a statement today denying claims that it is intentionally blocking support for the Google Wallet mobile payment app on the upcoming Galaxy Nexus. The response comes after a Google spokesperson confirmed yesterday that Verizon’s Galaxy Nexus would not support the company’s NFC-based payment app, spurring rumors that rivalry from Verizon’s own NFC payment system was in play.

Google Wallet isn’t going to work on anything besides the Nexus S 4G for the foreseeable future. Yes, that includes Verizon’s Galaxy Nexus, and very probably AT&T and T-Mobile versions, if they ever appear. Computer World broke the story, though I’d be wary of anything labelled “confirmed” from that particular source. Unfortunately, the news is not entirely unexpected.

Samsung Illusion for Verizon Wireless to launch November 23rd for $80

Verizon Wireless announced on Tuesday that it will soon offer the Samsung Illusion for $79.99 with a new two-year contract. The Illusion runs Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) and is powered by a 1GHz Samsung Hummingbird processor. It is equipped with a 3-megapixel camera, 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, a 2GB microSD card and support for sharing its 3G connection as a mobile hotspot. The rear casing and battery cover of the phone are made from 70% post-consumer material and 35% of the front-face is made from recycled materials, too. In addition, Verizon Wireless said 60% of the phone’s box is made from recycled paper. The Illusion will be available from Verizon Wireless’s website on November 23rd and it’ll land in Verizon Wireless stores in January of next year.

First Verizon 4G Phone Coming Mid-2011

Carrier network Verizon Wireless could have a new phone for its 4G network sooner than expected, according to a Verizon executive. The latest projection indicates Verizon will be selling a 4G phone by mid-2011.
Anthony Melone, chief technology officer at Verizon told the Wall Street Journal that Verizon would sell a phone capable of using the faster 4G network three to six months after Verizon launches the service. Verizon plans to do the launch in parts of the country by the end of this year.
