Carrier network Verizon Wireless could have a new phone for its 4G network sooner than expected, according to a Verizon executive. The latest projection indicates Verizon will be selling a 4G phone by mid-2011.
Anthony Melone, chief technology officer at Verizon told the Wall Street Journal that Verizon would sell a phone capable of using the faster 4G network three to six months after Verizon launches the service. Verizon plans to do the launch in parts of the country by the end of this year.
So far Sprint has led the pack in the network conversion to 4G, the next and faster generation of cell phone networks. Sprint has already rolled out its 4G network in several metropolitan markets, although it doesn't have a phone that can use it yet. Verizon has only done a few tests so far in the Boston and Seattle markets.
Sprint is also working on a different technology, called WiMAX, for its 4G network. Verizon's 4G technology is called LTE, or Long Term Evolution.
Verizon's phone will have to use dual chipsets, meaning it has two different phone receivers, so it can work on existing networks when users leave 4G coverage areas. Having dual chipsets will help Verizon sell the phone in markets where 4G is expected to arrive soon but has not been implemented yet.
Verizon did not comment on which manufacturer was making the phone or how far along the design was.
